KL sinkhole: Victim’s son returns to Malaysia to perform final ritual

PETALING JAYA: It was a touching moment when M. Suria, the son of G. Vijayalakshmi, who tragically fell into an eight-metre-deep sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India, returned to Malaysia to perform the last and final rites.

In accordance with Hindu tradition, the completion of the 30-day period involves certain rituals and Suria returned to the site to perform the rites.

"Ammavukku iruthi mariyatai sekirar' (final respects for the mother) said a TikTok video on Sept 23 showing Suria, 25, tossing flowers in the sinkhole during the final rites and prayers.

The video was uploaded by @sarvaessrashbinrajappa.

Netizens took to social media to express their condolences and sympathy to Suria.

"Rest in peace. This is how painful it is to lose a mother.

"Who wouldn't be heartbroken when the body of their deceased mum is not found. We can only be strong. Be patient, pray for your mum.

"He must be missing his mum.

These were some of the messages from social media users.

On Aug 23, the 48-year-old woman from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India.

Nine days later, after receiving expert advice, the government decided to terminate the SAR operation.

The decision to halt the SAR operation was made due to several factors, including safety concerns involving the SAR team members and the ongoing safety issues at the site following several recent sinkhole incidents.
