PUTRAJAYA: Colouring chicks is not considered an act of animal cruelty as long as the colours and methods used do not pose harm, danger, pain or suffering to the animals, says the Veterinary Services Department (DVS).

The DVS said this was stipulated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772).

Referring to a viral video on TikTok claiming that animals were openly mistreated at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism (Maha) 2024 exhibition, DVS said inspections were carried out on the chicks which were found to be in good condition.

It said there were no signs of illness or suffering.

“The DVS has also stationed animal welfare officers to monitor the welfare of all animals involved in Maha 2024, which runs from Sept 11 to 22 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang,” it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

According to DVS, the exhibitors had adhered to all animal welfare requirements.

The department also advised the public to consult veterinary authorities before making any statements that could mislead the community or provoke unnecessary reactions.
