KOTA KINABALU: A volunteer firefighter succumbed to his injuries suffered in an accident some 35 hours earlier in Sabah’s northern Kota Marudu district.

Masreh Masah died while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) I here at about 9.30pm on Monday (Aug 5).

The 50-year-old had been involved in a mishap when his motorcycle collided with a car at Jalan Kota Marudu – Marak Parak, near Kampung Hatobat, at about 10.30am on Sunday (Aug 4).

Kota Marudu OCPD Supt Simiun Lomudin said the car, driven by a 33-year-old man, was travelling from the Marak Parak area to Kota Marudu town when the incident occurred.

“It was believed the victim, who was travelling in the opposite direction, lost control of the motorcycle while negotiating a downslope bend and crashed head-on into the car,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Aug 6).

“Due to the impact of the collision, the victim sustained serious abdominal injuries and was rushed to the emergency ward at the Kota Marudu district hospital.

“But he had to be sent to QEHI for further treatment,” he added.

Supt Simiun said the hospital subsequently notified police that the man had died 9.30pm on Monday.

He said the car driver only sustained minor injuries to his arms and received outpatient treatment at the district hospital.

He said further investigations were being carried out under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

He also urged those with information about the incident to contact the district police right away to help in the probe.
