Perak records 12.7% drop in commercial crime cases

IPOH: The police have seen a 12.7% drop in commercial crime cases in Perak so far this year, says Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris.

The state police chief said between January and July, 6,619 cases were recorded compared to 7,586 cases in the same period last year.

“Our efforts in disseminating the information to the public have been effective. This shows that the number of commercial crime victims in Perak has dropped,” he said after attending an anti-cybercrime and bullying forum at the Ipoh Convention Centre here yesterday.

“It also indicates that public awareness and knowledge of commercial crime cases have increased,” he added.

Comm Azizi said 1,566 investigation papers have been opened this year, compared to 1,638 last year, marking a 4.4% decrease.

He also said that the number of cases that has been brought to court increased from 589 to 613.

“(This year) we have also conducted 688 operations, resulting in 703 arrests,” he said.

Comm Azizi said online fraud was the highest among all commercial crime cases, with 1,407 of them that resulted in RM55mil in losses.

“This was followed by 60 cheating cases with RM1mil in losses and 44 criminal breach of trust cases with losses amounting to about RM10mil,” he said.
