Johor Speaker notifies EC of Mahkota seat vacancy

JOHOR BARU: Johor State Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi says he has been submitted a notification of the vacant Mahkota state seat to the Election Commission (EC).

He said that the notification was sent via fax on Sunday (Aug 4) morning following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Friday (Aug 2).

"The Johor State Assembly submitted the notice to the EC for further action," he said in a statement on Sunday.

Sharifah Azizah, 63, who was Kluang Wanita Umno chief, passed away at 12.32pm on Friday while receiving treatment at the Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang.

The former Johor Wanita Umno chief was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Wednesday after experiencing breathing difficulties. – Bernama
