Meta apologises over translation error by Facebook relating to King's installation

PETALING JAYA: Meta has issued an apology over the erroneous translation on Facebook about the installation of Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia.

Meta's South-East Asia public policy director Rafael Frankel said the technical error on the platform has since been resolved.

"We were made aware of an error in the automated translation from Malay to English, affecting Facebook posts related to the coronation ceremony of Sultan Ibrahim.

"We deeply respect the Malaysian Royal family and sincerely apologise over the incident and any distress caused to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Johor Council and others impacted by this event," he said in a statement on Facebook, on Monday (July 22).

Previously, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) had clarified that its post on the social media platform, which was in Malay, had been mistranslated by Facebook.

"The English translation by Facebook was incorrect. RTM did not upload any condolence message in conjunction with the installation of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong," the read the statement.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Facebook also expressed regret over accusations that RTM was making inappropriate posts.

"Some people accuse RTM of making inappropriate Facebook posts in English. The original post was in BM (Bahasa Malaysia)," he said.
