KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will launch its entire election machinery to support the unity government candidate in the upcoming Sungai Bakap state by-election.
In a statement on Thursday (June 20), the party announced that it would fully support PKR's Dr Joohari Ariffin for the polls.
Umno named Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir as its election director for the Sungai Bakap polls.
"Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir will be the operations director.
"Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan will be the Sungai Bakap PRK war room head," Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said in a statement after an Umno supreme council meeting here on Thursday (June 20).
On June 12, PRK announced former teacher Dr Joohari as the unity government's candidate for the Sungai Bakap state seat.
The Sungai Bakap seat fell vacant following the death of assemblyman and Nibong Tebal PAS chief Nur Zamri Latiff on May 24.
