Scammer posing as a woman in dating app cheats man of RM12,000

SEPANG: A man lost about RM12,000 after he was duped in a love scam.

It is learnt that the suspect posed as a woman and used an online dating application to find victims.

Sepang Deputy OCPD Supt Shan Gopal Krishnan said the suspect got to know the victim via the application in January.

"After a month, the suspect asked the victim for funds to take care of the suspect's younger brother.

"The victim transferred RM12,000 to the suspect's bank account," he said in a statement on Friday (May 24).

Supt Shan Gopal said the suspect also claimed later that the younger brother went to England to donate an organ but died due to complications.

"The victim realised he was duped when his friend informed him that he knew the same suspect via the dating application.

"The suspect apparently used the same modus operandi on the victim's friend," he said.

Investigations led police to arrest the 27-year-old male suspect on Wednesday (May 22), he added.

"We are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said.
