Perlis MB’s son claims trial

KANGAR: A company owner who is related to two senior PAS politicians has pleaded not guilty to a charge of submitting false claims for the supply of drinks to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalulail, in February.

Mohd Syafeeq Mohd Shukri, 35, the son of the Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli and son-in-law of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, nodded when the charge was read to him at a Sessions Court here yesterday.

Appearing calm, he claimed trial to the charge of submitting a government document under the name of Mohd Farid Abdul Hamid, worth RM19,505.10, for the supply of drinks to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah despite knowing that it contained false details.

Mohd Syafeeq is accused of submitting the claims to Nurul Nabilah Mohd Sukri, an administrative assistant at the District Administrative Unit at the State Secretary’s Office, with the intention of misleading her superior, on Feb 19.

The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

The offence is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, which carries maximum 20 years’ jail and a fine no less than five times the amount of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Rehab Abdul Shukur prosecuted while Mohd Syafeeq was represented by Mohd Fadhly Yaacob.

The court set bail at RM20,000 with one surety, and in addition, ordered the accused to surrender his passport.

He is also required to report to the MACC office in Kangar every month. The court set June 28 for mention and submission of documents.

In April, the Mentri Besar’s son was among six men remanded by the MACC to assist in the investigation into a case of producing falsified documents to make RM600,000 in claims since 2022.

Two civil servants in the Mentri Besar’s Office, State Secretary’s Office and three company contractors were also detained.

All the suspects, aged between 26 and 37, were detained by the MACC on April 23.

They were released by MACC after the three-day remand order expired.
