Cops probe derogatory message insulting Islam printed on Domino's receipt

BAYAN LEPAS: Police have started investigations into a derogatory message mocking Islam printed on a Domino's Pizza receipt.

Barat Daya OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said police received a report on the incident, which allegedly occurred at around 3.05pm on Wednesday (May 15).

"A picture of the receipt was also circulated on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday (May 16) morning.

"We received a report over the picture, words insulting Islam. The incident allegedly occurred at Kenari Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang," he said in a statement on Thursday.

He said investigations revealed that an order was received through the Dominos app and included insulting words in the remarks section of the order.

"We have opened investigations for hurting religious feelings and using insulting or abusive words with intent to provoke a breach of peace under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

"We also urge the public to refrain from speculation which could threaten public order," he said.

Domino's, in a statement on Thursday, said it had lodged a police report over the incident.

"We do not tolerate discrimination or aggression of any kind, whether directed at our team, our customers or those in our community," read the statement.

Domino's added that appropriate measures have been taken against both the customer and the staff member involved.

"We are deeply disappointed that a customer made a hurtful and disrespectful comment when placing their order.

“We are also disappointed that one of our team members thought it was appropriate to share this online, including the customer’s personal information," it said.
