Bomb blast, gunfire near Golok jolts Rantau Panjang residents awake in the wee hours

PETALING JAYA: Vibrations believed to be from a bomb explosion in Gualosira, near Sungai Golok in Narathiwat district, were felt by villagers in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, in the wee hours of Monday (April 29).

Among those who were affected was a 45-year-old villager who only wished to be known as Imi, who told Malay language daily Sinar Harian, that besides the explosion, sounds of gunfire were also heard in the area.

"It occured at about 1.30am. My family and I were asleep when we were awoken by the vibrations and the sounds," Imi said.

The sounds of the explosion were said to have been heard from as far as 5km from Rantau Panjang town.

Earlier, a video of the incident was uploaded by local villagers on social media.

Meanwhile, Malaysia consul-general in Songkhla Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi said southern Thailand was still considered safe for Malaysians to visit despite several bombing incidents.

He told Sinar that this was because a majority of the incidents had happened in out-of-town areas and not in locations that were frequented by the public.

However, he said that while it was safe for Malaysians to holiday in the three southern Thailand districts, they were urged to exercise caution.

"Don't go to isolated locations and where possible, travel in groups," Ahmad Fahmi said.
