KKB by-election: EC advice to potential candidates

KUALA LUMPUR: Potential candidates of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election are advised to fill in the nomination form and do an initial check with the office of the returning officer or the Selangor election office prior to Nomination Day this Saturday (April 27).

In a statement on Thursday (April 25), Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said potential candidates were also advised to make the deposit payment in advance and the receipt should be brought on nomination day as proof of payment.

"Candidates representing any political party are required to submit a letter of authorisation to use the symbol of the party when submitting their nomination forms,” he said.

Ikmalrudin said nomination papers can be submitted from 9am to 10am to the returning officer at the nomination centre at the Hulu Selangor District Multipurpose Hall and Sports Complex.

On Nomination Day, each potential candidate can only be accompanied by one proposer and one seconder to enter the centre.

He added that the use of any musical instruments or loudspeakers for the purpose of political propaganda by any means, including through the use of any type of vehicle, is not permitted on nomination day and is an offence under the Election Offences Act 1954.

"The public and supporters accompanying candidates are prohibited from waiting or being within 50 metres of the nomination centre perimeter that has been set.

"Candidates who have paid a deposit for election campaign materials are also subject to the bylaws of the local authority for the purpose of exhibiting and distributing materials that contain photos of candidates, party emblems/symbols and photos of party leaders of coalition/component they represent,” he said.

The EC also advised potential candidates and political parties involved to always comply with laws, regulations, code of ethics and instructions issued by the commission, the police and local authorities.

The KKB by-election is being called following the demise of its incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong, from DAP on March 21 after a battle with cancer.

The EC has fixed May 11 for polling, with the nomination of candidates set for April 27 and early voting on May 7.

This will be the seventh by-election to be held after the 15th general election in 2022.- Bernama
