KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has called on motorists to be patient and courteous with each other on the road, especially as they head out on journeys during the festive season.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said traffic rules are in place to ensure the safety of all road users.
“Carelessness and impatience have no place on our roads and expressways. Please be patient with one another when you take to the roads,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Recently, an accident occurred along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway involving a Honda and Proton which went viral.
The accident occurred at around 10.15am on April 7 along KM49.4 of the expressway.
Bentong OCPD Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar had in a statement said that prior to the accident, both vehicles had been recorded driving recklessly and provoking each other.
Many netizens had also commented that the accident could have been avoided if both drivers had kept their cool.
Razarudin said traffic volume would increase on all major highways and federal roads during festive seasons as motorists head back to their hometowns while others took advantage of these periods to go on holiday.
“It is important for road users to understand each other,” he said.
“While we do understand that being stuck in traffic jams could prove stressful, motorists must always be rational and keep cool.
“We must be patient and courteous with one another and always comply with the traffic regulations.”
PLUS had previously estimated that a total of 2.1 million vehicles per day would use the expressway on April 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 14 due to the festive holiday, compared with 1.82 million during normal peak hours.
The increase is also due to the two-day toll exemption for all highway users of Class 1 (private vehicles) on April 8 and April 9.
Razarudin said it is important for motorists to be well rested and ensure their vehicles are well maintained before heading out.
“If you experience a vehicle breakdown, try to get your vehicle to the road shoulder and call the relevant highway authorities to give you assistance. Avoid making roadside repairs,” he said.
