KUALA LUMPUR: Book lovers can continue to explore a wide range of book titles and partake in diverse activities throughout BookFest @ Malaysia 2024, fostering a vibrant culture of reading and engagement.

The 18th edition of BookFest is happening now until April 14 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Spanning an impressive 100,000sq ft across Halls 1 to 5 of KLCC, it promises an immersive journey through the world of literature.

From Chinese and English books to multimedia collections and stationery, gadgets, IT as well as titbits, the event caters to the varied tastes and interests of attendees.

Themed “Reading Together”, the nine-day event aims to encourage a culture of reading within society.

Collection of events

Beyond the book displays, BookFest offers a dynamic lineup of events and activities. From author-sharing sessions to children’s competitions, cosplay contests, art and craft workshops and cooking demonstrations, the event caters to diverse interests, ensuring an enriching experience for every visitor.

For instance, renowned Chinese literature author Chang Man-chuan’s sharing session about her life experiences was an extraordinary success, with an overwhelming turnout of over 700 participants.

Popular will also be having its Anime and Comic Cosplay competition on April 12, where winners will bring home attractive prizes worth over RM4,700.

Cosplayer celebrity King Angel and Crazed Joker are their judges for the competition.

There is also a Children’s Colouring competition happening on April 14, where winners will be taking home amazing prizes worth over RM9,000 sponsored by Faber-Castell.

There will also be cooking demonstrations on April 13.

Nurturing emerging talent

BookFest also serves as a stage for showcasing literary talent and nurturing creativity.

Competitions such as the Children’s Choir Competition and the English Storytelling Competition provide aspiring artists and storytellers with opportunities to shine, reinforcing the event’s role as a catalyst for artistic expression and growth.

The Children’s Choir Competition saw eight schools in Klang Valley participated in the event, with the winners taking home trophies and certificates totalling over RM5,000.

Han Ming Choir emerged as the first prize winner, Mun Choong Choir secured the second prize while Yu Hua Choir claimed the third prize.

Meanwhile, 19 participants took part in the English Storytelling competition, where the winners were rewarded with trophies and prizes totalling over RM1,500.

BookFest also committed to community engagement and empowerment.

Initiatives like the Ramadan @ POPULAR programme show the event’s dedication to giving back, supporting orphanages and fostering a culture of compassion and care.

This year’s BookFest invited 18 orphanages to join in a cheque presentation ceremony, where they received RM10,310.87 in donations. Goodie bags and Raya cash were gifted to 40 orphans.

To emphasise environmental consciousness, BookFest encouraged attendees to bring their own bags or opt for reusable options.

By promoting sustainability, the event shows its dedication to responsible practices and environmental stewardship.
