PUTRAJAYA: Consumers can be reassured that any dishonest behaviour by traders will be closely monitored during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, says Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said there would be enforcement officers on duty to check on the prices and supply of goods, particularly essential items.
“Our enforcement command centre will also be in operation throughout the festive season to take in complaints from consumers. We hope consumers will assist us by reporting unscrupulous traders,” Armizan told a press conference here yesterday.
He said during the monitoring period of Ops Pantau – which aimed to observe business activities during Ramadan and Hari Raya – traders were fined a total of RM558,956 for various offences. A total of 164 compounds were issued on the spot between March 12 and April 4.
“Action has been taken against traders who, among others, failed to put up price tags, did not use valid weighing scales, and sold fake items,” he said.
Armizan reported that enforcement officers conducted checks at 38,126 premises across the country to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent unjustified price increases.
He added that the ministry’s integrated enforcement management system had enabled effective enforcement during Ops Pantau.Armizan said, for example, that if a compound was issued on the ground, it would be captured by the enforcement command centre.
“This integrated system will also provide transparency. There can be no claim that a compound issued can be cancelled.
“This is because a compound issued on site will have the record sent to the command centre in real-time,” he said.
