New school session begins for over 217,000 in Penang


KEPALA BATAS: A total of 217,886 primary and secondary students began their 2024/25 school session on Monday (March 11) at 397 schools in Penang.

State Education Department Director Abdul Said Hussain said this comprised 117,585 primary school pupils and 100,301 secondary school students.

"Year One pupils registered for the current school session total 21,053 at 270 primary schools, while a total 21,034 Form One students are registered at 127 secondary schools in the state," he told a press conference after visiting SMK Haji Ahmad Badawi in the morning.

He said the first week of the new school session would be filled with educational and entertainment activities to hold the students' attention.

He said among the activities are orientation for Year One and Form One students, art programmes, sports and community activities.

He said for the new school session, SMK Pendidikan Khas Bumbung Lima also commenced operations on Monday with an initial intake of 80 students.

He said the school has a capacity of 160 students.

SJK(C) Aik Hua at Lebuh Muntri began the session at its new premises in Sungai Ara.

"The school currently has nine classes with a capacity of 125 students from Years One to Six," he said.
