RM1 hike in fare acceptable

KUALA LUMPUR: Bus and train commuters in the Klang Valley are taking the RM1 increase in the fare for the MyCity one-day pass in stride. The MyCity pass, which has been revised to RM6 is valid for use on the MRT, LRT, BRT and buses operated by Rapid Bus in the Klang Valley.

Comments poured in quickly on social media, including from Malaysian Land Public Transport Fans on Facebook.

“I mean, a RM1 price hike is considered okay as it’s (for) unlimited use for the day. As long as Rapid KL provides quality services, a minimal price hike is acceptable,” wrote Anson Lee.

Richie Low echoed the view, saying RM6 for unlimited rides is still worth the small expense.

“What more can you ask for with RM6? Rapid KL doesn’t earn much from these passes,” he said.

Shaun Pillai said the one-day pass needs to be viewed in relation to other living costs.

“Your parking rate also costs more than this pass,” he said.

Kent Ong said detractors are generally unaware of the high overhead shouldered by Prasarana.

“For those who complain, do they know how much money is needed to run a transportation system?” he asked. The MyCity pass can be purchased at any Rapid Rail train station or selected bus hubs and online through the MyRapid Pulse app.

The price increase does not apply to the My50 unlimited pass, which has a 30-day validity at RM50.

In a statement on Thursday, Prasarana, the parent company of Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd and Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, said the one-day pass that offers unlimited rides on its train and bus networks will go up from RM5 to RM6, though the price of the three-day pass remains at RM15.

“In line with the expansion of the rail network in Klang Valley with the full opening of the Putrajaya MRT line last year, as well as the impending opening of the Shah Alam LRT line next year, the price of the one-day MyCity pass will be adjusted,” it said.

To encourage more foreigners to use public transport, Prasarana is also reinstating the one-day and three-day passes for those without a Malaysian identity card.

The passes for foreigners will be priced at RM10 and RM25, respectively.
