QuickCheck: Was a bus driver filmed smoking at a petrol kiosk on the NSE?

WHEN mishaps happen at petrol stations, such incidents tend to be of a fiery and explosive nature. In some cases, the results can even be fatal.

Hence, motorists have been warned numerous times to follow safety tips such as switching off the car engine, no usage of mobile phones or smoking while refuelling at the pumps.

Recently, a viral video showed a man smoking a cigarette while filling up a bus with diesel at a kiosk in Perak along the North-South Expressway (NSE). Did such an incident really happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

Muallim OCPD Supt Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir said investigations found that the incident occurred on Sunday (Feb 25).

"The owner of the petrol station has made a direct complaint to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry which is responsible for taking action against the user," he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 29) night.

In the 57-second viral video, a tour bus driver was seen refuelling the vehicle while smoking at a petrol station along the NSE in Behrang.

Supt Mohd Hasni said the offence was punishable under the Control of Tobacco Products Regulations 2004, which stipulates a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years upon conviction.

He also advised the public not to smoke in prohibited areas, especially at petrol stations, which could endanger lives.
