Former MCA Wanita head Teng Gaik Kwan honoured for contributions to pre-school education

PETALING JAYA : MCA paid tribute to its former Wanita head head Datuk Teng Gaik Kwan by naming an education centre after her for her contributions to pre-school education in the country.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said on Monday (Feb 19) Teng and Wanita MCA had taken initiatives to train pre-school teachers and ensure they obtain the relevant qualifications to teach young children.

He said in the 1990s, a majority of pre-school teachers did not see the need to be trained or obtain the professional qualification to teach pre-school.

He said that with the efforts of Wanita MCA and Teng's far-sightedness, over 3,000 pre-school teachers have since graduated with professional early childhood education qualifications.

"Between 1990 and 1992, Teng worked with pre-school teachers and educationists on a pilot study on a 30-month programme on pre-school teaching. This led the Centre for Early Childhood Education programme to be launched in 1993." Dr Wee said on Facebook.
