Penang cops arrest duo with nearly 20kg of ganja in car

GEORGE TOWN: Police busted a drug trafficking syndicate when two men were caught with drugs in their car during an operation in the south-west region of the island.

Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the local men, aged 23 and 34, were caught at around 8.30pm on Feb 9.

"The car was parked in a lane in the South-west district on the island.

"The men were seated in the car when they were approached.

"The car had 19.9kg of ganja which was kept in transparent plastic and gold paper.

"The drugs are estimated to be worth RM62,000 and were for the local market consumption.

"It could have catered to up to 40,000 people," he said.

He said both men tested postive for drugs while the 34-year-old has three prior drug-related offences.

"Both men have been remanded for seven days from Feb 10, ending Feb 16.

"We are investing the case under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.

"While we do have other details, we cannot divulge everything at the moment as we are still conducting the investigation into this syndicate," he said.
