KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 4,764 accidents, including 44 fatal cases, were recorded over the first three days of Ops Selamat held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the 44 fatal accidents caused the deaths of 46 individuals during Ops Selamat, which began on Feb 8.
"32 of the 46 individuals killed in accidents were motorcyclists and their pillion riders. They represented 69% of the total deaths during Ops Selamat so far.
"Overall, a total of 5,891 vehicles were involved in traffic accidents for the past three days," he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 11).
Comm Mohd Azman reminded all road users, especially motorcycle riders to adhere to traffic regulations and maintain focus on the road.
"Using the MyTTA PLUS application (travel schedule advisory) will assist road users to reach their destinations safely.
"Rest if you are experiencing fatigue or tiredness," he said.
On another matter, Comm Mohd Azman said a total of 5.78 million vehicles were on PLUS highways for the past three days.
"On Feb 8, 2.02 million vehicles were on the highway, followed by 1.97 million on Feb 9 and 1.78 million on Feb 10," he said.
For the Karak Highway, Comm Mohd Azman said 886,106 vehicles were on the road for the three days.
"On Feb 8, 285,776 vehicles were on the highway, followed by 341,310 on Feb 9 and 259,020 on Feb 10," he said.
Sufficient JSPT personnel have been deployed during the festive season as the department anticipated the hike in vehicles on the road given that the Lunar New Year falls on a weekend, he said.
"Road users will take advantage of the long break to visit relatives or go to tourist destinations via highways, as well as federal, state and city roads," he said.
