Two M’sians to be British envoy – for one day

KUALA LUMPUR: Two young Malaysian women will get a chance to be the British High Commissioner to Malaysia for a day through an initiative in conjunction with International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day.

Initiated by the British High Commission to Malaysia, these two women will get the unique opportunity to “head” the diplomatic mission.

“They will have to chair meetings, host a luncheon with women leaders, and attend a Commonwealth Day reception on March 11,” said the high commission in a press statement on Wednesday (Feb 7).

The British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ailsa Terry, said the event is aimed at inspiring and empowering young women who are interested in international relations and diplomacy to pursue a career in this field.

“Through this programme, we are giving young women in Malaysia a platform to talk about important topics. We want to develop young women as game-changers and showcase their potential as our future leaders,” she added.

To enter the competition for the post, participants must post a one-minute video of themselves answering the question, “If you were High Commissioner in a Commonwealth country, what issue would you highlight and champion on the world stage and why?”

The competition is open to Malaysian women aged between 18 and 25. Participants must post the video on their personal social media platforms with the hashtag #HCforADayMY and the tag @UKinMalaysia before Feb 21.
