KUCHING: Some 5,000 people are expected to attend the state-level Chinese New Year open house on Feb 10, says Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Deputy Premier said Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, would be the guests of honour, along with Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang.

"We have also extended invitations to federal and state ministers, heads of departments, representatives of associations and houses of worship and community leaders," he told a press conference on Friday (Feb 2).

Dr Sim said this was the first time the state government was hosting the Chinese New Year open house, which would take place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from 9am to 3pm.

"Traditionally, it was done by the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP). Because of the state-level open house, the SUPP open house will be held in Sibu on another date," Dr Sim, who is also SUPP president, said.

He said the celebration reflected Sarawak's ethnic diversity, and people visited one another during festive occasions.

"This open house is important for our racial harmony and showcases the best of the Sarawak spirit.

"With all the people's support, we should be able to set a good example for the rest of Malaysia," he said.

Activities lined up for the open house include a yee sang ceremony and cultural performances.

The Agura Band from the Sarawak Arts Council will also entertain visitors with music and songs.

"As we usher in the Chinese New Year, may Sarawak continue to progress and prosper while its people remain peaceful and united regardless of their cultural and racial background," Dr Sim said.
