Drugs worth RM704mil seized nationwide last year


KUALA LUMPUR: More than half a billion ringgit worth of drugs was seized in various operations nationwide last year, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin Md Din.

The Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director said the total haul was worth RM704.9mil while 273 syndicates and 22 labs were busted.

“We detained 179,865 individuals last year for various drug related offences including trafficking and abuse.

“On top of that, 1,012 individuals were detained under Section 3(1) of the Special Preventive Measures (LLPK) 1985,” he said when contacted.

Of the total arrested, 4,867 individuals were detained in 1,705 raids as part of Ops Pusat Hiburan.

“Among those arrested last year were 7,403 hardcore drug addicts who were repeat offenders under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“We also detained 621 civil servants for various drug offences,” he added.

Comm Mohd Kamarudin said the NCID opened 73,364 investigation papers (IP), of which 69,815 led to court charges. The department had a 95.16% prosecution rate last year,” he said.

Some RM104.01mil worth of assets belonging to drug syndicates were also seized, Comm Mohd Kamarudin said.
