Former Comptroller of the Royal Household for Istana Negara Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, as someone who had worked so closely with His Majesty, as well as Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, said the phrase 'Raja dan rakyat berpisah tiada' (the Ruler and the people are inseparable) was truly exemplified during Al-Sultan Abdullah’s tenure as King.
