Political appointments make a mockery of reform movement, says Muda

PETALING JAYA: The recent appointments of DAP and PKR members to government-linked company (GLC) and government agency boards perpetuate the cycle of patronage and cronyism, says Muda.

In a statement on Wednesday (Jan 10), Muda said it was "a travesty" that parties that were once vocal advocates of justice and reforms still indulge in political opportunism.

"How could these parties, which once resonated with the hopes and aspirations of Malaysians for a new era, now partake in the same despicable practices they once condemned?

"Umno, a party long criticised by Pakatan Harapan, continues its old ways under the guise of the new administration, with close allies of a senior minister getting appointed directly under his ministry," it said.

The party also questioned why Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, around whose struggle the whole Reformasi movement was built, had allowed such practices to continue.

Muda also called on Malaysians to hold these parties accountable for not staying true to their word.

"It is only through scrutiny and collective action that they (Malaysians) can truly usher in the change this nation so desperately needs," it added.

It was reported earlier this week that Wanita PKR deputy chief Juwairiya Zulkifli was appointed National Population and Family Development Board deputy chairman while vice-chief Sangetha Jayakumar was appointed as a Port Klang Authority board member.

Among those named in Muda's statement were PKR's former Indera Mahkota MP Fauzi Abdul Rahman, who was made chairman of MyHSR Corporation under the Finance Ministry in July; and DAP's RSN Rayer, who was appointed head of statutory body Penang Hindu Endowment Board in September.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had said previously that political appointees in statutory bodies was acceptable, but not GLCs.
