Cops to call up Telegram account holder over claim of inaction in assault case

TAMPIN: Police have denied an allegation that they failed to act in an assault case here and say they will call up the account holder who made the claim on a messaging platform.

Tampin police chief Supt Anuwal Ab Wahab said the claim in the Edisi Siasat Telegram account was made with malice to question the force's credibility.

"There is no truth in the allegation which was made to discredit the police," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 9).

He said police came across the posting at around 10am on Monday (Jan 8).

Supt Anuwal said police began investigating the assault case after receiving a report at around 2.50am on Aug 23.

"Based on (our investigation), it was discovered that the fight started because the complainant was intoxicated.

"Both parties, who are actually related, then had a talk and decided not to prolong the matter as the complainant was not seriously hurt," he said.

He said the complainant also apologised to the other party and expressed his regret for starting the fight while inebriated.

Supt Anuwal said the complainant subsequently withdrew his report, and the case was then classified as NFA (no further action).

He said police would be calling in the Telegram account holder for making the claim of inaction.

"We would like to remind the public not to circulate such fake claims as action can be taken against them," he said, adding that this would be done in accordance with Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
