JOHOR BARU: All temporary relief centres in Johor, especially those in rural areas, must always be in good condition to ensure a comfortable staying experience for flood victims.

State agriculture, agro-based industry, and rural committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said district offices and village chiefs had been told to constantly inspect all temporary relief centres.

“Initial supplies have been sent to temporary relief centres located in areas known to be frequently affected by floods, in addition to ensuring that basic facilities such as electricity supply and toilets are functioning.

“We don’t want to be told by victims at these centres that the toilets do not work and there is no electricity.

“We have taken the initiative and made initial efforts, so we hope that everything will go smoothly when the floods hit us,” he added.

Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Johor branch rector Assoc Prof Dr Saunah Zainon said that almost 2,000 of its students have registered to be members of Southern Volunteers.

According to her, it is the university’s intention to get UiTM Johor branch students to be active volunteers to help out during disasters such as floods.

“This is because Segamat is no stranger to flood disasters that affect hundreds of homes in the district.

“When floods hit the district, our student representatives and staffers will come together to help our fellow students and staff members, as well as the community affected by the floods,” she added.

Saunah also hopes that the spirit of volunteerism will be instilled in university students so that they will not just be an educated person, but also a noble individual.
