KOTA KINABALU: Wildlife personnel killed another monster crocodile in Sabah’s east coast Lahad Datu district.
The reptile was found behind a villager’s house in Kampung Remang and later shot by a team from the Sabah Wildlife Department.
This was the second crocodile shot dead in the district in four days, with the last one occuring on Monday.
The crocodile caught on Thursday night, measuring 4.8m in length, was longer than the previous one, which was about 4.5m long, but the authorities did not confirm the former’s weight.
“This crocodile was almost the same size as the one shot in Kampung Desa Bajau,” said the department’s Lahad Datu officer Silvester Saimin when contacted yesterday.
He said they rushed over to the village after being alerted by villagers.
“We found the crocodile, about 4.8m in length and a metre wide, behind a villager’s house.
“Eight shots were fired at the crocodile at 10.37pm,” he said, adding that all the shots were on target.
The crocodile’s carcass, said Silvester, was then taken to the Lahad Datu Wildlife Department for disposal.
On Monday at Kampung Desa Bajau, the crocodile weighing about 1.2 tonnes was found underneath a house at the water village before it was shot dead by wildlife rangers.
The crocodile, which almost attacked a child, was initially restrained by Civil Defence Force personnel, who later called in the wildlife rangers as the reptile was too large and aggressive.
