Body of elderly man found in Semporna fire

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man died in a fire that razed six houses in a water village in Sabah's east coast Semporna district.

The charred remains of the unidentified man were found among the debris by firemen after they put out the fire at Kampung Tepian Bakau at 10am, Monday (Dec 4).

Local residents had identified the man only as Ladin, 55. He is believed to be a foreigner.

A Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman said they received a call about the fire at 9am. The firemen managed to bring the blaze under control and stop it from spreading at about 9.45am.

The fire destroyed six wooden houses, a tuck shop and two vehicles, said the spokesman.

He said the victim was discovered at 11.16am among the debris of one of the houses.

His body has been handed over to the police for further action.
