Tourist dies, 14 others unhurt in Semporna accident

KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese tourist was killed when the tour bus he was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry in Sabah’s east coast Semporna district.

The 56-year-old victim was travelling with 14 other Chinese tourists when the incident took place at about 11.30am on Wednesday (Nov 1).

Semporna Police Chief Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the bus was headed to the airport in the neighbouring Tawau district from Semporna while the lorry was going in the opposite direction.

The collision at KM21 Jalan Semporna-Tawau, he said, occurred when the lorry veered into the opposite lane and hit the bus.

“The impact resulted in the tour bus crashing off the road and landing on its side on the roadside,” he said in a statement late Wednesday.

“One of the tourists died while the 14 other China nationals, including five women, escaped unhurt.

“The lorry driver suffered a broken leg and was referred to the Tawau hospital for treatment,” said Supt Mohd Farhan, adding that the victim’s body has been sent to the Semporna hospital.

He urged those with information pertaining to the incident to contact investigating officer Insp Hemkkumar Ayathuray at 012-3650021 or 089-782020.
