Man nabbed for snatching elderly woman's handbag in Ampang

AMPANG: A 23-year-old man was detained for allegedly snatching a handbag belonging to a female senior citizen behind a shopping mall in Taman Muda here.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said the 67-year-old victim was walking when the suspect, riding a motorcycle, snatched her handbag at about 3.40pm on Thursday (Oct 19).

"The victim lost two mobile phones, several personal documents and RM200 cash, which were in the handbag," he said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 22).

Investigations led police to arrest the suspect at a house in Pandan Indah at about 6.30pm on Friday (Oct 20), he said.

"We also seized two mobile phones belonging to the victim.

"We believe the suspect used cash stolen from his victims to buy drugs. He is believed to be responsible for several snatch thefts in Ampang and Cheras," he said.

The suspect has a criminal record, including for drug-related offences, ACP Mohd Azam said.

"He tested positive for drugs and he has been remanded until Oct 27," he said.
