State polls: Diva AA among first to vote in Hulu Kelang, where brother Azmin is standing

HULU KELANG: Controversial celebrity Diva AA, or Azwan Ali, was the first to arrive at the SK Klang Gate polling centre here on Saturday (Aug 12) morning.

The brother of Selangor Perikatan Nasional chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali told the media that at first, he did not want to vote any more.

"You have to write that. Because I gave up. Dislike... dislike... dislike," he said, showing the thumbs-down sign repeatedly.

"You know the politics of the country... all (deleted) and nonsense."

However, he decided that his vote was still of value and travelled far to exercise his right.

"The value of one vote is too great (to waste). It's not a matter of the candidate, winning or losing... the issue is we fulfil our duty as citizens," he said, urging the media to encourage all citizens to come out and vote.

Asked about the coincidence of him being first to arrive to vote where his brother is a candidate, he said: "Surprisingly, this is his first time standing in Hulu Kelang after years of being a 'somebody'. But that's his business."

Pointing to his red shawl, which he said he did not buy in Nibong Tebal but in Paris, he said a voter's choice was a secret but "not for the press, not for my followers – they know my choice."

Azwan said it will be a tough fight for Azmin to win the Hulu Kelang seat.

He even went on to say that his brother has never taken the opportunity to reconcile with him over the years since he gained positions in politics.

"My vote ... well the bond by blood does not determine it.

"Even though I had made many attempts to reach out to him (Azmin) but was written off.

"We want capable leaders, it should not be determined by blood relationship. When we see someone we can ascertain their capabilities to govern," he said.

"Time will tell. It is up to Hulu Kelang to make a better choice," as he laughed while making his statement.

In 1999, Azmin had won the Hulu Kelang seat under PKR following the dismissal and imprisonment of then deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 1998 by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
