BALIK PULAU: A 41-year-old man was detained on Thursday (July 6) for allegedly hitting the wife of the incumbent Bayan Lepas assemblyman here.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the suspect was arrested in Bayan Lepas at about 11.30pm.

"He has been remanded for three days until this Sunday (July 9) to assist in the investigation," he said.

Supt Kamarul said a check found the suspect has no criminal record.

In the incident that occurred at about 1.40pm on Thursday (July 6), Norhailee Rasid, the wife of incumbent Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz, had seen a girl behaving suspiciously in the shop.

She approached the girl who then ran away.

Moments later, the suspect rushed in, behaving aggressively and hitting Norhailee twice on the head.

The suspect tried to punch her, with the entire incident being captured on CCTV.

Azrul Mahathir had said he was not that concerned about the alleged theft by the girl but he could not condone the verbal and physical attack on his wife.

He said the incident had left the staff in the shop traumatised and the matter should not be taken lightly.

He said it should not happen to his wife or any other woman.

The police are investigating the case under Section 323/506 of Penal Code for causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
