Mentally disabled man killed in fire


RAWANG: A mentally disabled man died following an early morning fire at a house at Taman Desa Country Homes here.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail the incident occurred at 6.28am on Saturday (May 27).

"Two fire engines and 13 firemen from the Batu Arang and Rawang Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene.

"They arrived at 6.36am and found that a fire had occurred on the ground floor of the two-storey terrace house, but was put out by members of the public before Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived at the scene," he said when contacted on Saturday.

He said personnel then went in to conduct an overhaul of the house to ensure that the fire would not reignite.

"Initial checks revealed that an elderly man was living in the house with his mentally disabled brother.

"We found the charred body of the 56-year-old mentally disabled man in one of the downstairs rooms of the house," he said adding that the 65-year-old elder brother escaped without injury.

Wan Md Razali said that the cause of the fire and estimated damages were currently under investigation.

"The body has been handed over to the police for further action," he said.
