KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese national was reported to have drowned while swimming near Mantanani Island, off the state’s Kota Belud district some 100km from here, on Tuesday (May 23).

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the victim was identified as Shuwen Liang, 27.

He said they were alerted to the incident through the Malaysian Emergency Rescue Services (MERS) 999 number at 1.13pm.

The victim was given CPR after being pulled out of the water, he added.

"However, the victim was pronounced dead at the location by a medical officer," he said in a statement.

The body was then handed over to the police for further action, he added.

"We have yet to obtain the sequence of events that led to the incident," he said.

In a separate incident, a security guard died after his motorcycle veered off the road in Sabah’s interior Keningau district.

In the incident on Monday (May 22), Idik Sakunil was heading from Kampung Batu Lunguyan to SMK Tulid when the incident occurred at about 7.30pm.

Keningau OCPD Deputy Supt Nor Rafidah Kasim said the victim lost control of his motorcycle before it crashed at KM28 Jalan Sook-Tulid.

"The victim suffered serious head injuries and is believed to have died on the spot," she said when contacted on Tuesday.

She added that the case was being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for death by reckless or dangerous driving.
