'Pet' bear breaks loose in Telupid, shot dead after attacking elderly man

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man was injured after an attack by his relative's pet bear in Telupid, some 220km from here, after which the animal was killed.

The bear had apparently escaped from its cage before running wild in Kg Taviu Telupid on Friday (May 12) morning.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga said the village chief in the area later shot the animal dead as he was afraid more people would get hurt.

He said rangers were unable to get to the scene just yet as they were handling other cases, but would head there as soon as possible.

The victim has been sent to the Telupid clinic for treatment, and is reported to be in stable condition.

Tuuga said the rangers will haul in the person who kept the bear illegally to facilitate their investigation.
