JOHOR BARU: Johor recorded an increase in dengue cases in epidemiology week 18 (ME18) with 2,699 cumulative cases this year compared with 509 cases in the corresponding period in 2022.
State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said 973 (36.1%) were epidemic locality cases while 1,762 (63.9%) were non-epidemic locality cases.
“ME18 recorded 168 new cases with Johor Baru district having the highest number of cases with 107,” Ling said in a statement.
Kulai has 28, Batu Pahat (nine), Kluang (eight), Muar (four), Kota Tinggi, Pontian and Segamat each with three, Tangkak with two and one in Mersing.
He added there were four cumulative deaths from ME1 to ME18 this year compared with zero deaths in the corresponding period in 2022.
“We have issued 2,383 compound notices totalling RM 1.14mil so far this year to premises owners found to be the breeding places of Aedes mosquitoes and 56.2% of them have paid the fines," said Ling.
Separately, he said Johor recorded 399,830 Covid-19 cumulative cases as of Saturday (May 6), of which 396,791 were local infections while 3,039 were imported cases.
Ling said there were 218 Covid-19 positive cases recorded in the past seven days where 86 patients were undergoing home quarantine, 127 were hospitalised and five were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
“Statistics showed Johor did not record a drastic increase in Covid-19 cases in the recent months and hospital bed usage was still under 5.0%," said Ling.
He said as of Saturday (May 6), Johor recorded 353 Covid-19 Subvariant XBB cases, with 200 cases in Johor Baru, Muar (33), Kulai (28), Batu Pahat (23), Kluang (22), Kota Tinggi (20), Tangkak (14), Pontian with 11 cases and two in Segamat.
“The Covid-19 cases in the state are still under control although there are reports of the Subvariant XXB cases," said Ling.
