120 held over illegal sale of fireworks


PETALING JAYA: Over a hundred people have been arrested in special police operations against the illegal sale of fireworks.The operations, conducted between March 28 and April 9, saw 120 people being arrested, including for selling fireworks without a licence as well as for selling illegal fireworks.

“The estimated value of the seized items during the raids is RM3.4mil,” police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Norsiah Mohd Saaduddin said in a statement yesterday.

The seized items included contraband fireworks and firecrackers.

DCP Norsiah said police had also received 6,526 applications to sell fireworks in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya celebration.

“Out of this, 5,188 applications have been approved while another 1,338 were rejected for not meeting the required terms and conditions,” she said.
