JITRA: A total of 9,000 tonnes of solid waste was collected in Kedah during the first week of Ramadan this year compared to 8,800 tonnes in the same period last year, says Zaki Abdul Aziz.

The E-Idaman Sdn Bhd chief executive officer said the 3% increase was due to the daily waste generation from residential premises, businesses and Ramadan bazaars.

"I hope the people would be more prudent in preparing food for breaking fast and during the Aidilfitri celebration to reduce food waste because food waste accounts for about 40% of garbage in landfills.

"E-Idaman will carry out more bulk and garden waste collection in housing estates that have been identified as major generators during this period.

"Waste collection and public cleaning services will also operate as usual and even be extended on the night of the festival," he said.

He was speaking to the media at the Kita E-Idaman Ramadan ceremony in collaboration with the Kubang Pasu Zakat Office, Yayasan Jariah Aafiyat and Kedah Elite Media Club (KMEK) here Wednesday (April 5).

At the programme, six "asnaf" families in the Kubang Pasu district were selected to receive cash and food items as well as cakes to help ease the burden of the families preparing their respective Hari Raya celebrations. - Bernama
