Penang Island City Council secretary appointed mayor

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Datuk A. Rajendran has been appointed as the new mayor.

He will be taking over from Datuk Yew Tung Seang effective May 5.

Rajendran, 60, was appointed MBPP secretary in January 2022.

He has been with the council for more than 30 years since joining in 1985.

He was earlier the engineering director of MBPP before being appointed as secretary.

State local government committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo announced the appointment at City Hall on Saturday (April 1).

He thanked outgoing Yew who was appointed as the mayor in 2018 for his services.

Rajendran thanked Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Jagdeep for the appointment.

"I am aware of the challenges and will do my utmost to achieve the objectives given," he added.
