Prisoner charged with murdering cellmate over bread ration

MELAKA: A prisoner is facing a murder charge for allegedly killing a fellow detainee over bread.

Mohd Fahrur Radzi Chahat, 34, merely nodded his head when the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder was read before Magistrate Mazana Sinin here on Wednesday (March 29).

According to the facts of the case, he allegedly caused the death of Indonesian Paidi Atmok Sukar in Room 48 on the first floor of Zone A at the Cekal block in Sungai Udang Prison, Melaka Tengah, at 2.15pm on Feb 17.

The accused faces the mandatory death sentence if convicted.

The court fixed May 29 for next mention.

It was earlier reported that the 47-year-old victim had been sharing a cell at Sungai Udang Prison with the accused, who is from Ledang in Johor.

The two men apparently fought after the suspect accused the victim of eating his bread ration while he (Mohd Fahrur) was praying.

The victim died on Feb 24 after a week of being treated at Hospital Melaka.

An autopsy found that he had sustained head and facial injuries.

Mohd Fahrur has been imprisoned since 2016 under Section 304(A) of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence.
