Penang's first lady mayor passes away

GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Datuk Patahiyah Ismail has passed away on the first day of Ramadan (March 23).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who announced the matter in his Facebook post said he on behalf of the state government conveyed condolences to the family of Patahiyah.

“May her family members, acquaintances and close friends stay strong and resilient in the face of the loss of someone they loved,” he said.

He said the dedication and contribution of the late Patahiyah to the state was greatly appreciated and there were no substitutes to it.

In March 2015, Patahiyah became the first lady mayor of MBPP after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong officially declared Penang a city effective Jan 1.

Patahiyah was also the first woman to be appointed council president – as head of the Penang Municipal Council – in 2010.
