Condemn culprits behind MH17 tragedy, Segamat MP tells govt


KUALA LUMPUR: The unity government must condemn the perpetrators who shot down MH17 in July 2014, says MP R Yuneswaran (PH-Segamat).

He urged the government, through the Transport Ministry, to fight for the rights and dignity of Malaysians who were affected by the unfortunate incident.

“We don’t want to be seen as a third-class country in the eyes of bigger countries like Russia.

“Following the Dutch court decision (in November), I urged the unity government to issue an open statement saying that no one should be protected by world politics by any means," he said when debating Budget 2023 at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (March 22).

On Nov 17, Reuters reported that Dutch judges had convicted two Russian men and a Ukrainian man in absentia of murder for their role in the shooting down of Flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014 with the loss of 298 passengers and crew, and handed them life sentences.

Flight MH17 departed from Amsterdam for Kuala Lumpur.

Then prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob welcomed the verdict by the Dutch court, saying that it would give some relief and peace to the families and next of kin of the victims.
