KOTA KINABALU: A "localised" Malaysia Madani concept is needed for it to work holistically in Sabah due to the unique cultural, socio-economic and geographical landscape in the state, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
The Chief Minister said that although the concept introduced by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was inclusive and suitable in the national context, Sabah was unique and different.

“As one big national mould, this concept works for all but specifically for Sabah, a ‘localised’ idea has to be laid out and detailed to fit the rich and diverse cultural, socio-economic and geographical ecosystem here,” he said when opening a Malaysia Madani seminar here on Tuesday (Feb 14).
He said Sabah has unique needs in terms of development and other implementations and that is why the Malaysia Madani concept has to be translated with more specifics that cater to local criteria.

The concept, which Anwar introduced officially on Jan 19, was based on six pillars, namely sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust and compassion.
Hajiji believes that for a true "Madani nation" to be formed, principles of social justice, empowerment of economy and cultural beliefs, human rights and the freedom of speech have to be included.

As a state with diverse historical, geographical and ethnic background, Sabah can take the frontline position to showcase these concepts in the Malaysia Madani concept, he added.
He said the seminar held was timely as it could create awareness of the concept, how it should be implemented and what would make it work from the grassroots up to the top management levels in the state.
