BENTONG: In fear of a potential landslide, some 300 residents have been evacuated from Kampung Bukit Tinggi following a heavy downpour.

The rain started around 6pm, said village head Young Meow Foong.

"About 30 minutes later, the water-level began to rise as rainwater, mixed with rocks and boulders, gushed down from the hill," she added.

She said the shops and houses were all covered in mud.

"We cannot do anything now because it is late and dark and the rain has not stopped.

"I am worried that if the rain gets heavier again, a landslide may be triggered so I have advised the people to move out as a safety precaution," she said in a telephone interview, adding the rain has got smaller as at 10pm press time.

Young revealed that the road leading to Janda Baik has been blocked by rocks and boulders at the stretch of the road, some 300m from the police station.

Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman also shared videos of the water surge incident on her Twitter and Facebook account.

Meanwhile, the Bentong Public Works Department informed via its social media feed that the FT68 route along the old Kuala Lumpur-Bentong road near the Janda Baik junction was temporarily closed to all vehicles due to a 100m-long landslide.

It advised the motorists to use the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway as an alternative, Bernama reported.
