Swimming outing near Muar turns tragic after teen goes missing, feared drowned


MUAR: A 19-year-old male teenager is believed to have drowned after swimming in a river at Jalan Parit Haji Anuar, Batu 18, Ayer Hitam, here.

Muar Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohd Johor Tumin said that the incident occurred at 3.37pm on Wednesday (Jan 25).

“Investigations revealed that the victim had gone swimming in the river together with two other friends.

"The department then conducted a size-up around the area where the victim was last seen using a public boat," he explained in a statement.

Two personnel from the water rescue unit then conducted a dive around the area where the victim was last seen.

The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said that the victim was reported to have jumped into the river from the bridge.

“The victim then surfaced and was calling for help.

“His friend has tried to save him but has failed due to the strong river current,” he said, adding that members of the public should avoid conducting any activities near water areas due to the uncertain weather.
