Too many political parties already, Muafakat to remain NGO, says Annuar

KUALA LUMPUR: Muafakat Nasional has no intention of becoming a political party in the country, instead it will remain as a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

This was the assurance given by Muafakat president Tan Sri Annuar Musa on Saturday (Jan 7) after the NGO held its first supreme council meeting.

"I think we have enough political parties in the country. We shall remain as an NGO, we have a lot to do.

"We believe we can contribute in our way without having to transform ourselves into political parties.

"In fact one of our missions is to encourage our brothers and sisters who are running political parties to move in the right direction.

"We have more than enough," he told the press here.

Annuar had announced that Muafakat has chosen to follow the organisational structure set by the Registrar of Society (ROS) by forming based on state, parliament, and state assembly.

He said this was because they had received an overwhelming number of members joining the NGO with some 25,000 already from the 222 parliamentary constituencies.

"That is what ROS has approved, so we just stick to it. This is just the organisational structure, but the objective and activities are more important.

"It is basically a question of choice, you can either choose by election boundaries or normal administrative boundaries which are districts and territories.

"If you take Kota Baru, you have four parliament and state seats but many territories, so in our constitution, this is the structure we have agreed," he said.

He added Muafakat would only have state liaisons, and not have elections like other political parties.

The aim is to cut across all political parties and reach out to the communities, he also said.

Annuar announced that Muafakat would have four deputy presidents to assist the president.

They are Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, Datuk Seri Dr Santhara Kumar and Prof Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, he said.

Muafakat is also planning to hold a convention between March and middle of the year to discuss focussing on several clusters including economy, social and welfare, education and nationality, politic and leadership, youth and graduates, social media and cultural arts.
