Floods: Situation in Bau and Kuching worsens, 119 evacuated


SIBU: The flood situation in Bau and Kuching has worsened, forcing a total of 119 people from 30 families to be evacuated from their homes.

State Disaster Management Committee in a statement on Friday (Dec 23) said of the number, 75 of them from 14 families were from Kampung Bedaun, Jalan Sultan Tengah, Kuching.

"They have been relocated to a flood relief centre at the Kampung Bedaun multipurpose hall that opened at 4.38am today (Dec 23)," the committee said.

The Bau flood victims included a family of four from Kampung Opar, another 15 families numbering 40 people from Kampung Jugan.

The Kampung Opar victims have been sheltered at the Balai Raya Kampung Opar, whereas those from Kampung Jugan have been moved to the Balai Raya Kampung Jugan.

The committee is monitoring a total of 54 flood risk areas involving 73 personnel.

Five places which include Kuching, Serian, Kota Samarahan, Sri Aman and Betong are expected to experience continuous rain until Dec 24.
