MELAKA: The name of Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali as a potential candidate for the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15) has been coming up for a long time, says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The incumbent MP said talk of Sulaiman being named as candidate have been circulating for some time and were not new.

“I am ready to face him in GE15 if my party leaders want me to re-contest Masjid Tanah in GE15,” she said on Wdnesday (Oct 12).

Mas Ermietayi, who is also the vice-chief of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Srikandi, said she was also prepared to challenge Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh if he emerges as the candidate.

She also noted that the young voters below the age of 40-year-old makes up 51% of the 69,098 voters in the constituency who were eligible to vote in the GE15.

“I am sure the younger voters will cast their vote wisely,”she said.

On Tuesday (Oct 11), Sulaiman said he will leave it to the Barisan Nasional and Umno leadership to decide on his candidacy for the parliamentary constituency in GE15.

Beside Sulaiman, talk is also rife that either Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh or Masjid Tanah Umno Youth chief Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid are expected to be named as candidates to face Mas Ermieyati, who won the constituency under the Barisan banner in GE14 before joining Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in December 2018.
